Post Re: True Detective
This show is my current obsession! Feels like a grittier Twin Peaks.

Also excited to see how the anthology method works out for the upcoming seasons. I love the idea of getting high profile actors involved, probably some of the best acting I've seen from Woody and Matthew. Really looking forward to the last 3 episodes!

Woody's face was priceless when Gilbough and Papania laid out all those coincidences about Cohle at the end. This show just keeps me guessing! I love it.

I love Rust Cohle's pessimism.

Love that little compilation Bryce. Rust Cohle is probably one of the closest relatable TV characters I've bonded with in the history of television. My g/f still refuses to watch this show, but actually I'm glad we don't watch this together. I'd just get more pissed off.

Post Re: True Detective
Great show, top notch performances as has been noted, and fantastic writing. This is going to be another HBO pinnacle series. I am almost worried with all the amazing storytelling going on so far about this series arc ending in a matter of episodes, with the season conclusion. However it comes out though - intense!

My take on it is that Cohle is still on the case after going rogue after his fallout out with Marty, and because of the higher levels involved in 'the cult.' Great scene at the farm, and the projects too. I love that the show hints at going in one direction but then slams it down and throws you for another right after. Like any excellent story, you never really know what to expect.

Post Re: True Detective
It's been actually suggested online that Cohle might be a bit of a red herring and that the real killer might be:

Marty, with his golden hair being the "Yellow King"

I don't know about it, but you have to at least consider and weigh the option. That's what I love though- the guess work. Most shows I can easily see where the story is leading, not at all with True Detective.

Post Re: True Detective
I actually never got the impression it was meant to be Cohle, so I was kind of surprised by the thoughts here that it was suggested. You are right though, it might be anyone, which is exactly why the show is effective. I also really think they have nailed the past-future transitions, whereas in almost every other case they try to do this in, it fails on either one side or the other (or both) and ruins the story. Shows with actors that actually have talent, strong writing, and good production values are where the future of television needs to be. All this other crap they are throwing out there and clogging up the networks and cable is dragging down the medium and only helping it to die out. You can see recently (the past two years I would say) some gradual realisation of this with certain channels, but they are already decades behind.

Speaking of True Detective, does anyone know what the music is in this clip or where it's from? It's killing me as I've searched online all day:

Nah it's not that song. That's the one at the end when Cohle is in the school. I already ID'd that one for my sis in Philly. Thanks anyhow.

^^^ Ahh makes sense.

They should have named last night's episode "Booty Call". All I know is Harrelson's character Hart seems to be the luckiest son of a b*tch alive. :D

BTW can we have that really dumb "I FART A LOT" word changer removed whenever someone says b*tch. It's silly, stupid, and uber PC.

Man, super excited to see how this all wraps up.

They were playing a Melvins song when Rust went into the biker bar; A History of Bad Men.

Too bad that scene was set in the 90's and that song was released in the early 2000's, but I'm never upset to hear the Melvins!

Excellent point you've made here, the soundtrack is great:

Post Re: True Detective
The ending of the very first episode teased the audience to speculate that the real killer is Cohle, which at the time was a fascinating possibility, but if it turns out to be the case, I'll be very disappointed, because it's just way too easy and obvious given the emphasis on Cohle's personal darkness. My best friend who talked me into becoming instantly addicted to the show has an interesting angle: The facts of the crime don't really matter much at all to the series writers. It's all about the characters. The rural-pagan-weirdo-crime element is just a Hitchcockian MacGuffin. I don't fully agree, but think it's an intelligent perspective. My friend suggests it's possible that the season will end without a resolution regarding the ongoing crimes. Now that'd be interesting ... and if true, a lot of people will really hate it. :)

Early on in the season, something about McConaughey's stoicism reminded me strongly of the performance I first noticed him in ... as the father of the protagonist in John Sayles' great film "Lone Star" (who, as coincidence-or-not would have it, appears in flashbacks relevant to present-day events.) I couldn't help but wonder if the scenes in which Cohle fashions human figures out of cans of Lone Star beer was an intentional clever reference back to that film. Once the season is over I'll revisit "Lone Star" with an eye to any thematic or other common ground with "True Detective."
