^ Not surprised at all. Hopefully Edwards sticks with it.

Also.. Did anyone else catch the handful of jurassic park references?

Not specifically but Edwards' love of Spielberg was very evident. If there was an element of Spielberg-tribute in this movie, I thought it was a lot better done than "Super 8." What were the J-Park references? Definitely some "Alien" love in there. :-)

On BBC 5 Live last Friday Edwards said that although this film was made to be an entity unto itself, he wouldn't be opposed to directing a sequel "if the audience wants it."

I think the first scene with the helicopter going to see the fossils had a lot of jurassic park elements to it.

and yeah, the bus driver wiping his foggy window on the golden gate bridge to see godzilla was like the guy that does the same thing in the jeep when they see the t rex.

Apparently the numbers are so promising for the past 3 days that a sequel has already been planned.

He's clearly a fan of the Sony/1998 version and is bitter it didn't get a sequel.

I don't even look at it as a remake really. They didn't go for any real plot points from "Gojira" other than he exists due to radiation.

I noticed the Mothra stuff, wonder if that'll be the sequel? I hear the same 2 things from people who saw this. Either they appreciated the "slow burn" and build up and enjoyed the movie, or felt "cockteased" (heard it used) and wanted more fighting the WHOLE time and disliked the humans. So, whatever.

I'm happy they're making another. I'll see it. I wish Pacific Rim would get a sequel too. I enjoyed that just as much. I guess I'm most afraid kaiju or "giant monsters" will become the new "zombies" and we'll get overstuffed.

Last I read (about a month ago) there was no official green light for a Pacific Rim sequel, but Del Toro is writing the screenplay anyway. It did so well in Asian markets that there's a good chance it'll happen.

Post Re: Godzilla (2014)
Although I originally disliked the MUTO design, judging from the pre-release info, I thought they were really well done. I just wish there was more focus on Godzilla. It could easily have been called MUTO (vs. godzilla). Overall, I found it entertaining, with a few minor gripes: Nighttime, partially blocked fight scenes and majority focus on the human story/MUTO.
Did anyone else think the final MUTO death was too much like how Godzilla killed Orga in Godzilla 2000? But more abrupt, with less "wow".

There's a lot of open hostility to science in the USA. It's amazing. I felt bad for the people in that video. "Bigfoot is real, he just can't be seen by the human eye." :)

Adopt the metric system and all will be good.

This article from yesterday on the math level of American students, now close to developing country averages, is scary:

A little off topic, but Gareth Edwards just got picked to direct one of the Star Wars spin offs.. not too shabby!

Saw this last weekend. It was pretty good, but I honestly didn't see how some of my friends went to see it 2-3 times, it wasn't that mind bending awesome to me. Dragged a little bit on, Wish more focus on Godzilla and not as much on the MOTU... overall it was good for what it was.. a hundred years better than the 98 film.

Already in use if you work in the science field or are going to school for it

Not sure why that is scary or news at this point? Everyone knows the US has been lagging in the math and sciences for some time now. There are a myriad of reasons for this, those two fields have been politicized in our country (science is fake is some parts of this country, math is scary), teachers are inadequately trained, vastly underpaid, and dealing with a generation of super self absorbed kids. Also if you look at the US as a whole many of those skills are not put to use in small town America, thus not emphasized. My aunt is a high school calculus teacher in Princeton NJ, she says there are many bright kids but also those that just don't give a fuck. I suspect it's like that in Canada as well to a lesser degree- even though Math is emphasized:

So Oli, the US is bad in math but what excuse does Canada have for producing awful drivers?

I enjoyed it and can't really imagine a better Godzilla movie coming out of the US (at least anytime soon).

It has it faults, but was fun and a nice throwback to classic Sci Fi films of the past.

same thoughts!

i was scared to go after seeing pacific rim, but was pleasantly surprised.
much better than expected.

If a classic foe is revived for a sequel, should it be Biollante?
