Re: The Magi Maleficarum by Martin Ontiveros
One thing I dig about these new sculpts is that they seem to reflect Martin's current style. I think his work has always been identifiable as "Martin", but it's changed over the years from Booska/Robots, to the Ojo Rojo days, to the b&w/wizard/gig poster stuff he's been doing lately.

I'm conflicted. I love the design overall, but Asian buck teeth? Hmm.

Re: The Magi Maleficarum by Martin Ontiveros
I think its just the way he paints teeth on certain characters and this is the 3D translation. I didn't make that connection at all, but I'm familiar with his work.
Great characterization and sculpting. It'll be interesting to see how these get painted. Looks like maybe it could lead to busy paint jobs.

Re: The Magi Maleficarum by Martin Ontiveros
I kinda see what Oli's saying with the little guy. I think that sculpt is off of the drawing second from the right in the top row here. It seems more of a goblin face than Asian to me, and Martin does protruding teeth all the time. Then again, a trivial google search yields that offensive creepy WW2 poster below. So I can see how someone could make the association with the stereotype. Sweep the Leg ink drawing sale is GO! Head to martinheadrocks.bigcartel.com to get the skinny. Yes! I have a new online store, needs some customizing but it works for today. Feel free to share the link with EVERYONE. by Martinhead!, on Flickr

Re: The Magi Maleficarum by Martin Ontiveros
Thanks for the pic Blake! It does look a lot less like the stereotype as an illustration.
I just thought the slanted eyes, protuding teeth, samurai-like helmet and armor/robes... I don't know. Sorry if I'm too touchy with this, but my son has already been racially teased at school, and he's five, so you know.

Re: The Magi Maleficarum by Martin Ontiveros
my first thought, being that we are on a monster toy message board, was fangs, as opposed to a racial insult that would be totally out of MO's character..
cool figures, looking forward to seeing more.

Sorry if I'm too touchy with this, but my son has already been racially teased at school, and he's five, so you know. Sorry it took a few days to weigh in here, haven't been on this board in years and needed to create a new account-- I can assure you without any reasonable doubt, like way, way, WAY beyond any reasonable doubt that there are no stereotypes of any kind at play here. Not my thing at all, racism has as much appeal to me as fingernails on a chalkboard. I'm sorry your boy had to go through that, it can't be easy to have to explain to him why some people are so stupid and shitty out there. But rest assured, I'm not out to step on anyone's toes. I make art for everyone--except mean people, because they suck. Hope this brings some comfort-- MO

Re: The Magi Maleficarum by Martin Ontiveros
Thanks for taking the time to reply, Martin! I never doubted your intentions, in case it wasn't clear. But as I said in my second post (and relating to Josh's comment), the question is not so much with intention but with perception. While people into this scene might see nothing wrong with it at all, being familiar with your style, the same might not be said in the real world.
My intention was not to simply stir shit, just to express a possible cause of concern. If by some fluke I am alone, all's good!

Re: The Magi Maleficarum by Martin Ontiveros
It honestly wasn't something I even considered until you pointed it out--but a "similarity" is where it ends. Again, nothing malicious going on. Whether the general public sees it another way, I guess that remains to be seen. It's too late to change the sculpt... I took no offense to your posts (or my personal character), and didn't intend mine to be defensive--I only wanted to clarify any misconceptions is all. I just want everyone to be happy. It's all good MO
