Re: So I'm thinking about buying a record player...
If you're looking to score something on a budget, you could look for old receivers or amps at thrift stores, etc. A lot of the older gear will have static and crackles, but its usually due to corrosion/gunk on the potentiometers (knob guts) and switches.
Receivers/amps that have tubes may be a little more complicated due to the nature of obtaining new tubes, but I don't have much experience with those.
You can get lucky and find something that someone has deemed "junk" because its sounds like garbage.
I acquired a solid state JCPenny MCS receiver (that used to belong to my pops) which had these issues. I cracked it open, squirted this stuff
http://www.radioshack.com/radioshack-control-contact-cleaner-and-lubricant/6400148.htmlinto all of the potentiometers and switches and then just twisted knobs/flipped switches for an hour.
Now it sounds great!
If anyone is interested in this clean-up process I can post some pics as well.
Hope this helps, and thanks again for all of the advice to my initial questions!
