Post Re: Horror Movies
I saw two horror flix this weekend that I actually enjoyed. As Above, So Below was better than the usual found footage films, and I liked the setting (Paris catacombs). Juan of the Dead was a fun foreign (Cuban) horror comedy. I was laughing through most of it.

Really liked As Above, So Below.
Enough things were left for your own interpretation.

Still waiting for The Babadook which will get a theatrical release in Germany but does not have a confirmed date yet. I am so annoyed that I am thinking about just pirating it.

Babadook could have been a lot better. Neat concept but the ending was pretty weak.

I thought it was great for what it was.

If you can accept the fact it wasn't any kind of a horror film at all and just the story of a single parent trying to keep her sanity then it's pretty powerful and incredibly creepy simply because it's real. Not the monster or the book or any of that. Just her struggle within herself not to do the unthinkable. That is what makes it scary. She was the only monster.

Post Re: Horror Movies
Can anybody suggest some horror films from the past 10 years that have cool creatures effects in them?? Something along the lines of Poltergeist/From Beyond/Xtro ... seems like the majority of horror films these days are either slashers or involve some dirty looking long-haired spirit. Where's the fun stuff??

South Korean film The Host. Cloverfield. Pacific Rim was ok. Troll Hunter was awesome. Slither. The Mist ruled. The Descent is 10 years old. District 9 is sci fi action. Splice was kind of cool. Cabin in the Woods was amazing.

That should keep you busy for a bit, report back once you watch any of them and have fun.

I agree with almost all of BrickBat's recommendations.

Also, for a fun take on a zombie flick...Dead Snow!

Seen them all haha! Thanks for the suggestions though.. Cabin in the Woods was pretty cool.. I think some of the better recent horror movies I've seen were Inside, [Rec], and Drag Me to Hell. I want some real creep out Cronenberg style stuff.. Maybe there's just none out there

Try Starry Eyes.

Recently saw the second one, which I thought was a mixed bag - but the "It's not what it looks like"-scene early on may just be one of the funniest of its kind.

I recently checked out the Babadook. Instant classic in my book. I've been waiting for one like that for awhile. I was blown away by the child actor too. They tend to ruin horror movies but this kid was excellent. I actually loved the ending. I thought it tied the whole thing up quite nicely.

Despite some flaws, Oculus was the best horror movie I have seen in quite a while.

After this, As Above So Below, Insidious, and The Babadook (still no release over here) I have high hopes that mystery horror is back. All that torture porn stuff can take a break for forever.

Some new stuff has rolled into Netflix. Finally got to see the new The Town that Dreaded Sundown. Definitely better than the original. Also watched A Good Marriage which was decent. Seemed kind of rushed though. Everything was wrapped up pretty quickly and easily, so they missed the boat on what could have been a real nail-biter. Gonna watch Horns on Friday!

Yeah I agree, best horror movie I have seen in a long time, instant classic for sure.

Has anyone seen Digging Up the Marrow yet? The trailer looks terrible but I love Alex Pardee's art and creature design so I am wondering if the movie is any good.
