45cm Daikyo Dimetrodon dinosaur monster Soft Pachi Monster
Went for: ¥74,800
I really like this piece, but unfortunately it was sold very high.
I had not seen one before in sale, only in the Andy's blog (Kaijukorner) where he put some photos of vintage Dinosaurs.

^ Love it! I'm not into most of the dinos (trying to stay focused), but I love back spines, like King Zaurus.

The paint does not appear new to me, kind of dull.
Bags are stapled sealed, and no signs of tampering.

I mean they are bootlegs to begin so well never know if they are legitimate bootlegs. Haha.
But my feeling is that they are paint samples or one off versions and not repaints..

I'm happy with the purchase either way :)

That's a beauty ! That seller had some good stuff ... most of the items went a bit high though. There was a KR riderman bootleg that went for 18600y!

So this ended this morning. I know this ear version of the Marusan Ultraman goes for big bucks, but I had not seen an unpainted one before. The auction seller called it a "graffiti series", where I presume the owner would paint it themselves. Is this correct, or is this just a painted one that wore over time?

Definitely looks marked where the red paint should have been.. Could it have been stripped?? "graffiti series" sounds like bullshit

Marusan did make a self-paint Ultraman and Ultraseven but they were larger than giant size and made from poly vinyl. This may just be the original head version, but that price seems high for one that would have been stripped or completely faded.

It looks stripped to me... the unpainted areas that have copped the light and dirt are yellower than the 'red' areas that look fresh.

Yeah like Mark says there were large ultraman polys and a couple of mini sets that you could paint yourself but I don't think blanks were ever marketed specifically as 'do it yourself' figures.

You're right Scott that seller always has very good things, usually in bag or in excellent condition. Too bad it ends always very expensive  , even though I never lost the hope to find a bargain jajaja.

Does "poly vinyl" mean something other than the usual soft vinyl used in figures? Or does it mean "polyethylene", like in Jumbo Machinders...or something altogether different?

I may be incorrect, but I muse it to mean very thin vinyl that is blow-molded and usually has highly visible seams.

That's real interesting! Yeah, polyethylene (Jumbo Machinder/shampoo bottle plastic) is usually blow-molded for toys like these...and, yeah, they often have really prominent seams. But the thing is, polyethylene's DAMN hard to get paint to stick to. It usually requires *lots* of sanding and priming...which obviously isn't necessary for solvent-based paints like V-color on traditional soft vinyl. So it's weird to hear that polyethylene figures were sold as "self-paint" toys!

I like to collect Poly toys - I agree the plastic is hard to paint, alot of my vintage has weathered paint and you can scratch the paint off some of them. Its because of the oil content of the plastic prevents the paint bonding with the surface, but there was plenty of painted poly's out there.
2 sorts of paint were usually used .. an acrylic which tends to scratch off and an ink based paint which has a more rubbed look

examples ..

Here's a shot of my Marusan self-paint poly Ultraman
Image

He stands 48.5 cm tall and you can see the paint is easily worn off. I saw a picture of one MIB once and, IIRC, the paint came in the little plastic pots like you used to have in grade school and that come in paint-by-numbers kits. I had heard that this toy was only sold in one Japanese department store during Christmas season of 1966, however, that may be apocryphal. I do know that Japanese collectors place a higher value on ones that have never been painted based on auction ending prices. I like mine just as he is. 8)

Nice shape for almost 50 years Mark!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe M1 based their Giant Ultraman (glow and non glow) off this sculpt right?

EDIT: My eyes weren't fooling me and yes it is (also I still am looking for a glow version after all these years!):

Didn't post about this until the auction finished, but I guess this is why Mandarake has been bidding up all the AM-5 recently... http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/auction/item/itemsListEn.html?te-uniquekey=14b7b27eb1b

That playset was particularly annoying, as I would have been one of the highest, if not second highest bidder on that, only to see it thrown in an auction and not sell. Nice work on artificially inflating the market.

I have that bootleg Fireman. Won it a few years ago, and it seemed to pop up quite a bit for around 11000 yen. Weird chemical reaction from being bagged for 40 plus years discolored the arm but I love it (more than the normal Fireman removable helmet versions). I think the same manufacturer made the bootleg clear helmet Flying Attack Human. Here's some pics:
