I like the tins myself. That one came with some nice postcards and an extensive booklet.
I admit they ruin the symmetry of a DVD shelf, though . . . .

Yeah, my Hellraiser/Hellbound tin is close to #12000. My main OCD gripe with the tins is not so much shelf symmetry, but the fact that due to their rounded corners the nice booklet and lobby cards always came pre-dinged...

Hoping it makes its way to Netflix before the end of the year.

was reading through this thread a bit today at work. about a year ago vhs collecting was brought up. i dabble a bit in vhs collecting myself, and usually horror. here's a shot of some of my vhs collection. i mostly focus on terrible shot-on-video garbage from the late 80s to early 90s.

Tusk.
I know many people will probably hate it but I had a fucking blast. So much ridiculous whatthefuckery, some really disturbing things, some good jokes, more bad jokes, a cameo that really has to be added to the whatthefuckery list and the movie was actually a little scary (mostly thanks to the awesome Michael Parks but Justin Long did an awesome job at being a total asshole). I guess you have to like Kevin Smith to like Tusk. I loved it. This is something that has not been there before (and that alone should count for something). 9/10

It follows.
Good. Did not quite live up to the hype but still very recommendable. Though I feel you could have done more. (And in some parts less, I think they hurt the mystery factor a little in showing too much.) 7/10

Yeah, I completely agree with all those points. People should, at the very least, give Tusk a worthy try. And It Follows had a lot going for it, but was not the classic throwback everyone is making it out to be, though still decent. It had some great potential, and is still well made for all its flaws, but some of it was trying way too hard, and other parts turned the horror into almost slapstick. I think they were still trying to put a little something in it to make it appeal to a more 'modern' crowd of horror fans who have grown up with nothing more than torture porn graphicism, jump scares, and cam-footage schlock.

I guess that this can fit here(?) - it is about vampires after all. :P Anyhow, just watched What we do in the Shadows last night. Highly recommend it. Okay, so it isn't a horror movie, but filmmakers should take note, that is how you make an entertaining movie out of a highly played out concept. Great fun, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, even me.

I just got a chance to watch It Follows and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Was it the best movie ever? Not by a long shot, but it was as much of a modern day John Carpenter movie as we will get. Until Harbinger Down comes out at least. I loved that it was just built on suspense and that even with the entity in plain sight, you had to guess a few times if it was really there or not. I also just saw Zombeavers and as ridiculous as it is, I thought it was a fantastic B Movie.

Anybody watched The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears? A heavy-handed attempt at modern Giallo, but not without it's moments.

Did I already mention Berberian Sound Studio? One of my favorite discoveries on Netflix. Kind of a poor man's Polanski psychological horror flick.

[REC]
Finished the [REC] quadrilogy on the weekend. While I found the first two (especially the first one) really outstanding (in all terms - zombie movie and found footage horror) the third and fourth installment were rather mediocre (and actually took away from the mystery they built up in the first two). Anyway, the first one as a stand alone movie will always be amongst my favorite horror movies. Not only because it is a really good zombie movie but also because the ending scared the shit out of me.
(PS: Way better than the US remake Quarantine)

Agree, Rec was really good, and still enjoyable for what it is. I think I have vague recollections of the second (and possibly even the third) but beyond that it all gets mixed up in my head with the remake (horrible) and it sequels as well (even worse). Not really surprised they tried to exploit it though, as usually happens when a relatively unknown film, particularly a foreign one, gets a good reception. Haven't checked out the fourth installment yet, as I lost interest the series, but it was something out there I might give some time to when I have nothing else. The premise seemed pretty silly though too.

Finally caught Witching and bitching on netflix. Wow what a strange movie, starts as heist film then to comedy then to horror. It was a fun movie all the way through. It was hard at times for me to read the subtitles and watch the action on the screen. They talk very fast so quite a bit to read. Then again I watched it after getting out work

Haha, that was a really great article. Thanks for sharing it. Made me smile, while also reminding me of all the horrible exorcism related films I (and I am sure we all) have watched through the years. It also made me think what other great scenarios you might extend this to; for example best vampire hunter to be friends with, most badass robot/cyborg bodyguard, dude with the coolest gadgets you want to be your big brother, most effective assasin to get rid of t̶h̶o̶s̶e̶ ̶d̶a̶r̶n̶e̶d̶ ̶f̶l̶i̶p̶p̶e̶r̶s̶ people who annoy you, etc. :)

Anyone see Juan of the Dead? Pretty funny, and a good film overall.

I actually likes As Above, So Below. Maybe because of the setting. Certainly not a masterpiece, but entertaining enough for what it was.

Afflicted was another found footage film, and I really enjoyed it. Check it out!

Also forgot to mention Open Grave!

100% agreed. Just watched REC4 last week. It was alright as a movie, nothing mind-blowing, but as a finale to the series, it was lackluster. Lame note to go out on after a strong opening salvo.

I totally recommend REC (and REC2). Even REC3 was fun, but doesn't tie in well to the series...but still fun.

I watched this ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKVlMMbTI9s ) 20 min Vice short on Satanism in Mexico. Felt like better than average found footage which made me wish there was some comedy horror found footage perhaps by some team like the Tucker and Dale vs Evil guys (really some Kids in The Hall found footage horror is what I want).

Well there is/was the reunion tour, so who knows, it could happen. I bow to the genius of that request though, my good sir.

Finally saw Unfriended. The concept was pretty original as far as the entire movie taking place on someones laptop screen but the story itself was pretty bland and uninteresting. No real gore. No real anything honestly. Too much soap opera teen drama not enough scares.

Nightlight was a MUCH better film with a similar story but instead of a computer screen you get creepy woods and very good acting as well. Some good scares and cool effects and the concept about where the camera was beats the laptop screen by a mile.

Watched Creep the other day and it was pretty blah. Beginning to realize that Mark Duplass doesn't understand the genre.

For whatever reason I sat through [rec] 4 a few days ago. Pretty ridiculous, as I had expected. Seems like they kinda of just gave up and didn't even attempt to write any kind of story, nor set up any suspense for that one. Looking at where the franchise has gone, starting from paranormal/demonic possession → some kind of zombie/disease outbreak → alien(?) parasite menace.... hmmm, I guess you just lost me along the way.

Rec 4 was awful and a sad way to go out on such a great series. I actually even like Quarantine quite a lot.

I was surprised how entertaining Unfriended was, I actually didn't get bored at all, which even in hindsight seems unbelievably. They definitely pulled off the gimmick to the best effect. It was predictable and unsurprising as far as the narrative goes however. Also, it was strange none of those kids had parents or siblings, apparently.

I watched The Ring Virus (Korean version of the ring) the other day. It's really bad, though I did like that they kept some themes of gender that were apparently in the novel. Bae Doona plays that version's Sadako, and I liked her in Sense8 which is how I came about watching it.

I rewatched The Loved Ones. It's still excellent and anyone who hasn't seen it should. 80's throwback prom themed Chainsaw Massacresque torture porn, but with a heart and lots of dark humor.

Just watched this, and it's a hoot. Another good comedy-horror film is the Australian flick Housebound.
