Just sat through Teeth. Slightly more hit than miss, but it would have been really great if they hadn't hit the comedy quite so hard.

its worth the watch I think... starts off really into the horror, then you get a little comic feel towards the middle end... it did take a bit of time to get into it... but i enjoyed it. watched it about a month ago.
Based on the recommendations here, and a [relatively] okay rating on RT, and against my better judgement, I beared through Unfriended. Nothing about the premise of that movie or the way it was made, made it sound the slightest bit appealing to me, but what I can say, I guess I am clearly desperate for some horror entertainment (not which I think this was, but I digress).
Anyways, only really commenting here and mentioning it again to save some other people who might share my mind the tortuous hour and twenty minutes or so this sucked away from me. I guess I am just too old or not with it, but I honestly found it a horrible film. I was fed up in less than a minute with the 'gimmick,' but I could forgive that - which is exactly why I sat through the entire thing, hoping for something, anything, redeemable. I didn't find it. To each their own though; like I said, I guess I am just not in that era, but nothing about the film was relatable to me. The actions was simply atrocious, I found the story and writing was pretty awful, and none of the main characters behaviour throughout the film made any sense (to me). Horrible portrayals of terrible characters, who were in no way something I could understand or appreciate. If general people are like that now - and it may well be that they are - it is the true scare of this movie for me. The film was an exercise in annoyance. Yes, I am a grumpy old dude.
But THE WORST part of this movie is that it did such a pisspoor job of even attempting to address cyberbullying in a reasonable and sensible fashion. At least if the message had been delivered I would be willing to look over some of its flaws, but even at that it failed. The people making this film don't understand (or show that they did) what bullying is really about, nor deliver any kind of story related to that - except in a very oblique sense. It is something serious, and it actually really pissed me off that they did a cheap rip on the Amanda Todd video. They should feel embarassed to have included that. Grrr, see, I didn't even want to write much, but this movie just got to me with how much I didn't enjoy it. I could go on and on, but anyways, I apologise for the rant. Sigh. Horror failure. Movies like this are why I am always skeptical of so many recent forays into the genre, and why, when there is something even moderately well done, it shines that much more.

Rosemary's Baby is probably my favorite of all time.
I also really enjoyed Cabin in the Woods although I know some hated it. The homage it paid to many of the classics were great. Part of my enjoyment was probably from the fact I knew nothing about it going in.

Polanski's whole "Apartment Trilogy" is some of the greatest horror of all time. RB also makes me think of the "Satanic-cult conspiracy" sub-genre, which I have a penchant for.

I had no idea there was an "Apartment Trilogy". I am going to have to check out the other two!
Another one of my favorites that I forgot to mention was the original Halloween. That movie really did eveything well.
Horror is a genre that is fantastic if done right. There is a lot of potential for excellent filmmaking.

Re: Horror Movies
Yeah, Repulsion and The Tenant are the other two of the trilogy. Lots of good paranoia and crumbling minds. Most definitely worth a watch.

Re: Horror Movies
Yeah, I should have mentioned the names of the other two movies I guess.
Polanski's horror output is top-notch, even Fearless Vampire Killers has some genuine scares in it. I'd add his version of Macbeth to the mix, as well. It came after Sharon Tate was murdered, so it's pretty brutal.

I've watched Rosemary's Baby twice now since it was brought up here. Such a great damn movie.

I was hoping someone would bring up "Goodnight Mommy".
I really liked this movie...it's a beautifully shot film and the child actors are great. However I thought this movie was more of a psychological thriller. I saw it last year at Fantastic Fest and I'm curious what the general feedback will be once it's in US theaters next month. The US trailer was cut to make it look like a creepy horror flick so I think some people will be disappointed (à la "The Babadook").
I saw the trailer for Goodnight Mommy a couple *weeks ago and got more of a psycho thriller feel from it. I was severely disappointed by The Babadook all around, so hopefully that won't be the case with this one.
If it hasn't been mentioned before, The Taking of Deborah Long was decent.

I had a chance to watch Repulsion last night. Fantastic film. I was surprised at how well the lead actress portrayed schizophrenia. Especially considered this is from 1965. Lots of nice cinematography also.

Re: Horror Movies
"THE WITCH" trailer came out today and the film is definitely something to keep on your radar for 2016. It played at Sundance in January and will be at Toronto (TIFF) and Austin (Fantastic Fest) in September. I've seen it but will wait to spout off my feedback once more people on SB have experienced the film...I don't want to skew anyone's expectations with my overly zealous love of this movie.
Directed by first-timer Robert Eggers, "The Witch" is about a New England family about 400 years ago (before the Salem Witch Trials) whose newborn baby mysteriously vanishes. Blaming everyone but themselves, the family begins to turn on one another as the mysteries of the surrounding woods starts to unravel.

Re: Horror Movies
Watched Teeth and Wyrmwood recently. Both are horror/comedy, and both work fairly well. Although Teeth would have had more bite (haha) if they hadn't hit the humor as hard during the gore scenes. Wyrmwood suffered from a split-personality. The story-line with the woman kind of kills the momentum of the movie. Both are worth a watch, but I doubt I'll be going back for seconds on either one.

Re: Horror Movies
Goodnight Mommy: good acting. Drawn out and slow. Lot's of stuff that could have/should have been cut. Pace of a late 50's film. And I might just call this a "snuff" film.
Seems there is a lot of stuff out now, in film or tv, about how our childhoods effect us, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders (inc addictions). I don't hear the discourse but I see the reality being shown. Just a thought.

Re: Horror Movies
That Witch trailer looked good. I like the period look and the fact that I didn't see too many cheap CGI effect scares going. Could be worth a watch.
I also saw that Wyrmwood zombie flick on Netflix recently. At first I was thinking this is going to be fucking awful but as it progressed it's a decent watch. Not the best but definitely did not want make me to cave in my computer screen.
