Post Re: Sick of Star Wars
Well The Force has Awakened the 13-year-old in me. I'm very excited. My only "hmmm..." is that the Starkiller Base appears to be a planet with Death Star-like trenches and a big ol' death ray thingie. I was never a fan of the second Death Star so a kinda-sorta third one does indeed seem like an incestuous trope. Nevertheless those Leni Reifenstal-like scenes of the First Order troopers assembled on (what I assume is) the snowy Starkiller plains look awesome, and no offense to Lixx, but I like the idea of female and nonwhite leads. "A long, long time ago" really needed to join the 21st century. I know this is über-geeky but I'm excited that this movie was shot on film using 35mm and IMAX cameras, excited that the film looks dark and tragic, love what I've seen of the cinematography despite J.J.'s signature lens flares.... And what the hell, I can't help but like BB-8. :D

Hey I did say this in my post:

Nothing wrong with strong female leads

So I'm not against it- it just seems like a lazy obvious ploy to do rather than create characters that are unique to themselves without older character traits that's all. Hell I think the next James Bond should be Idris Elba for that matter.

I do too. No clue how he feels about it but he'd be a perfect next Bond.

love that commercial.

Getting tickets for this movie is going to be near impossible, looks like we'll be watching it in Jan.

Nice commercial and now I definitely want to get myself some of that Kraft Dinner. I hope it is not a US-only release, but that is sort of the norm. :?

I can understand the pre-sale of the tickets, but it also kinda bums me out too. I am sure, with the amount this is going to be playing everywhere, that even with the popularity it won't be horrendously long before I can see it, but avoiding spoilers or discussions of the movie for few weeks or a month is going to be nigh impossible in this era.

I kid I sit and talk to in my Forest Ecology class was wearing Star Wars Vans the other day so I had to mention the new movie trailer. He seemed bummed when I said I wasn't gaga over it and said he already has tickets for midnight show on the 17th. I lamented to him this will be the first Star Wars movie I've not been to the premiere of on opening night. He then looked shocked because the realization came over him that holy shit you're old! We had a laugh because he was around 8 when he saw Phantom Menace and I was 8 when I saw Star Wars in 1977. He egged me on saying "You're going to break tradition then?"

I don't know. I have the luxury of having an IMAX theater literally 5 minutes from my house. Maybe I will see it to keep the streak alive. IMAX makes everything better and I know the visual will be good regardless. Tickets available still for the 18th I see hmmmmmmm

Well, I am wary of setting hopes/expectations high, especially for something that I have grown up with and loved like little else, but I think I would still seize the opportunity if it presented itself. Worst case you sit through a bad movie, but it is still a 'night's entertainment.' Even for horrible films, at least if you can take it in a cinema experience, that is always something [hopefully, though not always].

I won't be tripping over anyone trying to see this in a theatre packed full of screaming adult-kids. When episode one came out, I waited a few weeks and got to see it in a near-empty theatre. Not hoping for the same luck this time (the hype is much greater than it was then), but I'll happily wait. The spoiler thing doesn't worry me, can't be any worse than hearing about Vader being Luke's dad standing in line to see episode six... Till then, seems like a good time to go through all the old toys and build some excitement~

Getting back to the OT for a minute, I just discovered this excellent webcomic today. Short, and dialogue-free, but with some amazing artwork and a lot of heart packed in to just a few pages. He captured some stunning detail, great action, and a real story - his passion comes through in the execution. I really like it. A lot better than 'official' comics I have read; I would love to see more of this.

Green Leader by Daniel Warren Johnson.

Haha! Yeah finally read the entire Reddit thread on this. it's a pretty amazing theory and super fun read. but the whole time all I could think about was that this is the most brilliant marketing move in the history of time!

Post Re: Sick of Star Wars
I always thought of Jar Jar as Uncle George's oblique and resentful reference to George W. Bush. The effectiveness of stupid puppets under the influence of arcane power with selfish vested interests to usurp legitimate Democracy. Jar Jar is established as a a seemingly benign (if annoying) fool for childish comic relief in "Phantom Menace," but in "Clones" is unwittingly used for a nefarious greater evil. I'm only being half-serious here but do actually think it's fair to say that the Republic-to-Empire political intrigue in the prequels had much to do with Lucas' feelings about the loss of American Democracy to sly Corporatism during the Reagan-to-Bush years.

Not unlike how ruinous Dubya has slithered out of public view to paint his gawdawful self-portraits in private ignominy post-presidency, the erroneous Gungun is only seen for a brief moment in "Sith," at the funeral of Amidala, who'd lamented "so this is how Democracy ends ... to thunderous applause."

For what all that's worth. :D

Oh what the hell, bring on Kylo Ren already.

^ Wonderfully re-framed, Dean! Although I imagine that I'll die not having had another look at those first two films (I never did take in the third), your thoughts on Jar-Jar are a genuine balm to sather upon my memories of those cinematic missteps.

The boxing style posters are a bit more interesting to me than the others. I really enjoy this recent offering from Gabz, c/o Bottleneck Gallery. It does have some flaws, which I won't point out immediately because you can't unsee them, but more than makes up for it from its OT material.

A little more info here.

And, since we are on about original trilogy posters, this simplistic trio from Matt Ferguson is also pretty nice.

Original trilogy forever. If this nearly forty-five minutes of Star Wars commercials doesn't unleash the kid in you, then you, sir/madam, might just have no heart.

Star Wars

Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi

Oh so, so many feels and memories.

^ Indeed! Thanks for sharing that Steve. I've already started digging for my toys, which I've kept since '78. So exciting when something you'd grown tired of can light your senses up again! Lovin' it.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, a strange alliance brews~ I took Draculan with me on a road trip to visit a friend, and she had some Halloween decorations still about the yard...
