Haha, well I'm sure she'd be game. She loves to shred some paper (or attempt to, in this case).

Not long before Christmas, I made a call over some discrepancy with a bill. As Soon as I go to read the required numbers off of it it to the customer service rep, that whole section of the bill had disappeared. Nikki, codename: Applejack (that's the little helper in reference), had ripped it off and was sitting on top of her cage, making confetti out of it.

She has the intelligence of a 2yr old child, and everything that goes along with that. She can be funny, playful, and cute as hell, but definitely a diva who knows exactly how to piss me off and will then laugh about it (yes, a human laugh). Conures are considered the clowns of the parrot world because of this attitude. Not that I find real clowns funny, but you get the meaning. Ha, but yeah, she's my buddy. I've got a lot of love for that crazy bird

I used to volunteer at a nature center in Westchester County, NY back in high school. We had an African Grey parrot named Gandalf there. He was a smart bird...knew a lot of words and was pretty friendly. He would even toot to the Popeye the Sailor Man song in the right spots.

Parrots are great animals. Are there a lot more things that have to be taken into account by the owner, versus a typical pet? (The dog owner asks.)

Ha, Gandalf sounds fun. I get a kick out of it when parrot's can sing along at certain parts. Yeah, african greys seem to be on the top tier of parrot intelligence. Nikki doesn't know any songs (not that she couldn't have learned some), but we'll finish and start each other's wolf whistles. There's also a funny routine someone must've taught her before she came to me (she's a rescue) where we'll say "What?!" back n forth to each other. Kind of like a metaphor for the human and parrot relationship

I had always had dogs too and it wasn't until I became sick and predominantly restricted to bed that it was suggested that I get a companion bird to care for. I'm now on my third (the first two were budgies). I still love dogs but can't take care of or play with them anymore, which killed me because Brock, our late american bulldog, was awesome and we were really close.

One of the nice things about having a bird is that although they can be messy, it's mainly concentrated to one area. Bending over isn't necessary either (which I physically can't do anyway) because her cage and all supplies are elevated, and she can fly to me wherever I am. Ha, though that also means there's no putting food out of reach like with dogs. Though their wings can be clipped if need be.

A parrot's emotions are very human like too, which can be complex to figure out sometimes. And because of this you can't really control their actions like you can do more-so than not with dogs. You have to provide suggestions to make them think it's what they want to do.

Nikki used to bite the hell out of me when I would let her out of her cage, even though she was wanting out just to be with me. It didn't stop until I realized that it was because I was putting her in her cage during the day without a reason that she understood. Sort of like if you were put into a cage against your will by your loved one. How would you act when let out? This ceased by my first putting a treat in there for her if I needed to put her away for any reason other than bed. Now this is also a Nikki specific issue, not an all parrot one, but it still lays out how they think.

There is no Master relationship like with canines. To parrots, you are their equal. You can teach them, but never for the reason that it's because you said so. Ugh, she'll always think I'm being mean by not letting her eat chocolate. But I ve grown to really respect and appreciate parrots. They are independent (or think they are) like cats, can be as loving as dogs, can imitate human speech, and have an intelligence level and problem solving skills on a simian level.

The parrot bond is very strong and she kisses me so much that she would've been kicked out of my hs for pda. She also talks to me, preens me, tries to feed me sometimes, and makes me laugh every day. It's been very rewarding and she's become one of my best pals.

That's awesome. The companionship of a pet is really important, I think.

I love my buddy, Declan. He's always happy/excited to see me...and anyone else for that matter. We also have a 3-year old turtle named Riley.

Before Riley, I had another turtle, Mikey. He was 25 years old. I had him since I was 8, so Mikey is obviously short for Michelangelo.
