check out this semi dumb, but entertaining bbc show on japan
http://youtube.com/watch?v=73DvpYDKP8U
this episode, they tour nakano broadway.
I hate the word otaku and the way this guy is acting like he is on a alien planet, but it is fun

 Re: japanorama
Thanks for the link, very entertaining. My wife use to watch the Japanese show on the Otaku. She bought me a t-shirt from Hot Topic that says Otaku in Japnaese. I wore it one day and just about everyone I passed on the street looked at me and made comments. Pretty funny stuff. I actually wore the shirt the night I slept out for the Pushead Damnedron.

That's cool, but also sort of sad.
If I could send a message to my nerdly bros in Japan it would be: collecting toys and sex (with real live women) do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Theres two series of this show.
He meets Nigo and asks him if, because he has so many times, he spends all day on the internet and wanking off to porn
But then he can say that because Ross has a huge Mecha collection, the guy takes a month off from his radio show each summer to go to Japan scouting for toys.
oh, he also meets Hard Gay.

That dude has houses just for his collections!! How crazy is that?
That Bape Cafe is right next to Erostica. Not my kind of thing.
Cool video though. Thanks for sharing.

yeah, its not in the clip but he explains the suit and where it comes from. Then they show a clip from the show of him swinging some guy round and round with his extendable arms and then flinging him to the floor.

Hah, good stuff! Just learned from my GF that "otaku" has made its way into Chinese because of the movie "Train Man" (which I am going to rent ASAP!) "Otaku" is "Yu Zhai Zhu" in Chinese, which is a character for character adoption.
I spent a few minutes explaining the English word "geek" (our closest equivalent) and how it includes cosplay. Apparently in the Chinese usage of the term, cosplayers aren't necessarily "yu zhai zhu" since they're extroverted enough to go out in public dressed as live garage kit characters! The concept of "yu zhai zhu" is of a super-introverted closet geek who only ventures into the sunlight to buy ramen at 7-11.
One thing's for sure. The "otaku," collector, hobbyist, etc has a decades long history is East Asia and has never really had the social stigma that geeks long held in the West. Of course since today's geeks run a lot of the world's biggest companies in the US and Europe, the stigma is not at all what it once was!

lol.. my friend actually talked me into going to the massage place in season 2 episode 2 part 2. it was a trip... too bad i had no clue what they were saying & hardly knew any english. i feel sorry for the girl that had to put my sock back on... i was going to do it myself. it wasn't "shady" if that's what you're thinking (at least i hope it wasnt!)

Interestingly, the characters for "otaku" refer to someone's home, and originally were used for quite a different meaning from the modern slang. The term is used to emphasis that the person hides out at home most of the time. I think to find an English equivalent, we'll need to combine "geek" with "homeboy"....
Homegeek?

I've ended up watching a lot of these. The animated Junko Mizuno title sequences bumped up the cred to me. It was fun to watch Nigo try to maintain his aloof coolness while Woss hits him with dumb questions. And nice to see an english interview with Hard Gay HOOOOOOOoooooo!
