I don't post much, but I've been collecting for several years and the coolest thing for me is to walk into the stores and buy stuff off the shelves. I lucked out a couple weeks back when someone tried to order two Smoguns online, and I was able to waltz in to the store about noon and pick up the extra with the other goodies I picked up. Not everybody can do that, and web sales are a saving grace, but it means not so much "hot" stuff on the shelves anymore. So, you hunker down and get tough about it, make connections, join the community, know your friends. And I've said it to him directly, but publicly, Cheers to Ramos for fostering the right attitude and providing the forum for it.

The author of that article I am sure gets many complaints from legit collectors (define that however you want, but I mean it as non-flippers, which you can define however you want), because I suspect flippers don't complain that much -- for flippers it's business, miss a deal, wince but don't cry about it, and move on. But he's striking out at everybody as though we are all flippers and stand for things that are not strictly RFSO. A flipper is one thing, but an RFSO colletor who also flips is something else, and that is what he is saying.

It actually seems to me like the author is trying to rationalize his efforts to solve a problem that many here would like to see solved. He doesn't want to upset real collectors, so he lumps them in with flippers. Can it be done? Who knows? But that doesn't mean stop trying. I can appreciate the effort, but alo, f*** him for how he said it.

well said ^^

If you don't like flippers, then don't buy from flippers. If you really want something, stop acting like an 8 year old and show a bit of patience instead of needing something right now. If everyone calms down, maybe flippers won't see such a sucker market that they can take advantage of.

Of course this is never gonna happen, for every person who can show a bit of restraint, there's another who needs that hype piece to take a picture of and show off. It's so easy to be idealistic about this stuff. It'd be great if people didn't buy stuff for trade bait, or buy a couple toys so they could sell it a week later, but people are selfish and small. To a lot of people, RFSO is a one way street that means deals for stuff they buy but not passing on deals to others. It's like people like lowsk8tr selling stuff for mad deals on ebay and then people buying from him and turning around and selling it for more.

Also, a lot of people really say they love the thrill of the hunt as much as getting the toy. What kind of thrill is it if you pay through the nose for a toy with no real effort at all?

Collecting should be like getting busy; if you go for the gold straight off, you may get the toy, but without the foreplay of hunting it down, it's hardly satisfying and it doesn't make for a good story either.

I agree: collecting is hard.

I wish I got emails about the state of collecting from Pushead. (just a guess) Who do you think this person is?

i thought it was a good post and was suprised at the response here. i think that treasure hunters and collectors are two different things and many of the members here and at kr have become treasure hunters.

some people are louder than others. doesn't mean they are representative of everyone.

sure there are truths inside the ramblings, no doubt.
but personally if i had such pessimistic and jaded views of collecting, i don't think i would even bother. there would be no joy left.

guess i will take inventory of my feelings five years from now and see how it goes.

no fight here, just a comment.

flippin makes the world go round. More than half the shit i own has been bought from flippers. Flippers arent really the problem tho.

if there is anything to blame or take notice of it is the hype machine. The nature of being hip means dying when everyone finally notices how cool you are. Once everyone catches on it's over. What has happened here is everyone has begun to catch on.

Over many periods in time this has occured and what happens next is the part everybody hates (this is real life tho folks)...the money making. wether its your favorite online store(flipper) or kid cupid(flipper) or flippinaintcheezy(flipper). one would be a fool to not make gain of a situation where people show their status as a person thru their buying habits (think lexus, its a toyota with a different hood ornament).

Though the flipper is a dick for taking advantage of it, it is human nature. And the one to really blame is the buyer. Were buyers to not buy shit for rediculous prices it wouldn't happen. But since people are under the impression they are buying a piece of themselves essentially, they will pay out the ass for it willingly two seconds befor you do.

thats life right?
