I have just been told that if I use a service like LinkPoint or AuthorizeNet then the checkout time will only be about 5 seconds which would significantly cut down on the problems I think. Though, if there was a crazy rush, I guess a lot of figures could sell in that 5 seconds!

We are also considering not giving anymore hints as to what time we will be putting stuff up. That should cut down on traffic, but will surely piss everyone off, am I right?
We would still announce what day, but just not get anymore specific than that.

What about a random drawing? You could give people a window of time to sign up (24 hours) and then you do a random drawing. Advantage:Everyone ahs an opportunity
Disadvantage: Additional work for you, would allow more flippers to join in the drawing, people can set up fake email accounts for more chances,
