So, the people that overpaid are supposed to take the hit on the figure, just so everyone else can have a 'normal' price? That doesn't make sense.

To me, there's nothing wrong with selling something for a high price if you actually paid it. You're not gaining anything; maybe you just didn't know the actual price.

If the price is too high, people just won't buy it.

I'm not saying they're supposed to...I'm just saying don't expect to sell it. And don't piss and moan when noone buys it for an overinflated price. And don't whine when prices in "the market" are too high. Set the price however you like, just don't expect people to bite...and be prepared for people to say "that's overpriced". As for knowing the "actual" price? There are numerous ways to guage what a reasonable price for something is.

Fair enough.

I realize that actual price is easy enough to gauge if you do your homework. Unfortunately, I think that not everyone is so circumspect in making their purchases; otherwise, there'd probably be a lot fewer flippers out there.

You're definitely right on that. It doesn't help when this stuff gets so hyped people have to "act now" lest they lose out. I still can't wrap my head around the overpriced impulse buy, then the "not feeling it" with a sell-off soon after (the lucky bags are a little different since people weren't exactly sure what was in there). I usually hem and haw over a purchase, then am more than content with it afterwards.

I agree with you, you shouldn't have to lose money if you were a foolish buyer. Hillsy put it the best though, don't expect another sucker to come along and want to pay for your mistake.

But what really gets my goat is jerks selling hot toys for inflated prices not because they paid that much for them, but rather they are just taking advantage of people in an artificially inflated market.

I've never seen anyone argue the flipside of this - no pun intended. That when a collector pays a high price for a figure - or even the retail price (say $75.00 for a nice M1) and 2 years later when that figure falls out of favor and can be found on ebay for, say, $23.00 - that the rest of us are morally obliged to pay the seller in excess of market price so we're not guilty of taking advantage of that person's misfortunate. Yet, if a collector has the foresight, good taste, or luck to buy something that eventually becomes "hot," it's immoral for that collector to later sell it for a price that exceeds what he paid for it (in order, say, to fund the purchase or other stuff that collector likes).

For every figure we buy that turns out to be popular and rises in price, they are 2 or 3 for which we'll never get back close to what we paid for it. I don't think it's fair to expect people to only suffer losses but never profit (and I'm not talking about people who buy something that's hot for the sole purpose of making a buck - I'm talking about bona fide collectors).

The best advice is to not let your emotions get the best of you. Buy what you like but don't spend more than you can afford because you feel you have to have a certain figure. None of this stuff is essential or important in the grand scheme of things. Wait it out - prices will fall, or your tastes will change, or you'll find something else that you think is really cool that doesn't break the bank.

Elvis, I don't see what you're saying as wrong, there's nothing immoral about selling something for 'what it is worth.' The dude on ebay is clearly isn't a collector selling something he bought for himself and hoping to get what they're worth. Seeing as these have been available for about a week, it's hard to believe he or she bought them, displayed them and then decided to move on. Of course it's their right to do so, but if you're gonna flip stuff, you better have a thick skin and enough IQ that people are gonna call you out on it.

Selling a week-old smogun keychain for $95 or a zag for $200 is outrageous.

how is John BS?

I've bought items from him in the past, rare and regular, usually around retail or what he's paid.
