in the last 3 years track bikes have blown up in my small city of richmond, va. I remember when only like 15 of us rode them. Now there seems to be a few hundred. One of my friends sells keirin frames if anyone is interested

Yes. It has. BMX kids and skaters growing old crossing over has contributed to the popularity. for anyone that doesn't know, these are velodrome style bicycles with no brakes. The gear is fixed which means you can pedal backwards and you can't coast.
The picture in my sig. is actually some of the fastest bike messengers in NYC trackstanding on 2nd Ave and Houston. I'm no messenger but that's me on the far left with my head down. I've been into the track bike culture for a few years now. Track bikes are the shit right now. They have non sanctioned races called alleycats where several people race throughout the city getting their manifest signed or doing something silly at a checkpoints. Tons of fun. The biggest is coming up in Feb. It's an annual event/race called Monster Track. Messengers from all over the world converge on NYC to compete. The only requirement is that you ride a fixed gear/track bike with no brakes

Here's a flyer I did for MT6 a while back.

here's a video with 1st hand view of what it's like.

Thanks for the explanation. I had no idea what the deal was.

There are rumors that the Chicago City Council will be outlawing bikes with no brakes by spring, bringing fines and impounding bikes.

Not surprising, as this city council also outlawed foie gras last year

not that I pay it any mind

There are some cheap fixed gears out there now, I like this one:

I love the flyer!

That Alleycat NYC video is great it looks like tons of fun, I would get hit by a car so fast if I tried to do that.
