I cant really get into any Mayhem. I guess I would go old if I had to choose but its never on rotation. We're on the same level as far as Sigh goes.
Gudsforladt is a pretty solid album.
Carpathian Forest did the jazzy black metal well. "Cold Murderous Music" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnxf4nPwgIo "Cold Comfort" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJjOwRlaBgE "Nostalgia" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ezO8yjLoEA Thanks for the recommendation for Sigh though! I'm loving it.
I gave Sigh's new album a try.... Its a no go for me. There is some great great Jpop out there but this just doesnt fit in anywhere for me. All this black metal Jazz talk keeps bringing me back to Shinnings album Blackjazz. Not black metal but an awesome album
Wild Hunt is pretty good, though not really black metal, just some elements. The newest Horseback is pretty good, again not really black metal. Gorath & Order of Orias are both pretty cool bands, both a little more progressive. Raate is some cool chilled out black metal. Blodsrit is a pretty great Swedish band that I never see get mentioned. I love pretty much all of their stuff.
The Wild Hunt album is great, bi-polar blackish metal. Just picked up the Watain live 13th anniversary set. An unbelievably clean live sound, the DVD that came with it , Opus Diaboli, has some great live footage although the rediculous "personal journey" of Watain includes moments such as being a wolf pack that dwells under the black sun.... yeah
Just got my first record in a while today, the new Panopticon album, Kentucky. I haven't had a chance to check it out just yet, but will get on that tomorrow. In related projects, I did however just listen to Seidr - For Winter Fire for the first time in a while. Highly recommended... Also, while not black metal (there are some blast beats in there, though!), I think fans of experimental music like Mamaleek, Locrian, etc., with open minds would really enjoy this -- Wreck and Reference - No Youth. I had to buy the LP after listening to two tracks. Free download from the record label: http://theflenser.bandcamp.com/album/no-youth
Sounds pretty good man, might have to pick that up. Someone was looking for some black metal rec's on another forum & here was a list I came up with. These are some of my favorites. There were a few bands I left off the list cause they were already mentioned in that thread. I tried to leave out the really obvious stuff. Anyway I highly recommend any & all of these bands if some of you don't know them already. If anyone is looking for some specific songs I can post some youtube links. an album i picked up years ago just because of the cover not the best album, but still a band that was gone too soon. Not sure if this is Black Metal… not sure what the fuck black metal is anymore but… I heard about this band because a fan bit the head off a rat. silly, I know. the band is Ptahil (EDIT: Brook mentioned) and here is the worst music video of all-time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JotWWpoumrM&feature=related i dig it still listening to Dragged into Sunlight's "Hatred for Mankind" after about 2 years now. I'm not too well versed on "black metal" so it's good to see this thread alive again… for now
Ive become a pretty rabid fan of Watain recently and to a lesser extent Dissection. Watain's Opus Diaboli DVD is up in its full version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5svLbvTBYI
^ Thanks for the link. Marching Church - Iceage's "black metal" side projet. Very catchy ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kZ8Kwr3Zxg
Castevet - Mounds of Ash is tonight's listening. Really liking it so far and I'm only on the first track -- Red Star Sans Chastity.
What the hell, really? That's very weird. I had to look it up, haha. Some more info. here: http://www.mtvhive.com/2012/08/03/twili ... interview/ So, he's a big black metal fan, huh. Very interested to hear this once it comes out. I love Monument to Time End.
I was big time into the second wave of BM, dont listen to it much these days. I liked early satirycon and dark funeral the most, nothing too underground. I enjoyed most of the pagan sounding bands, ulver and the first moonspell album and a lot of therion. I grew up in Mexico, so whatever was making the rounds in the community at the time is what I picked up. In other words, a heavy dosage of immortal and stories about burzumVsmayhem, hating on cradle of filth and being wowed by dissection was pretty much required in those days, hahaha. Im glad I grew up. later years, I found the gutemburg sound and finally settled for opeth and thats about all metal I have these days more or less bands have come and gone for me, but I dont really stop listening to those guys. This thread was a very fun read, and I got to see a bunch of new bands I never heard of or passed up all those years ago.
You can check out a track from Cold of Ages here. And they're doing a short tour with Menace Ruine. I've never been more jelly of West coasters.
