Well dammit - now the CP thread is locked! And so soon after another douchearific post by Paul!
(I know, we're suppose to keep it positive and play nice. But sometimes this guy just deserves to get rained on, and his stupidity is fairly entertaining for those dull spots of the work day.)

    Private board, private decisions.
IF it was a government sponsored arena then we'd have a problem.

You only have freedom of speech from the government.
    Thus my post.
This board is S7's and they can choose mods and do what they see fit.
A thread disappearing here isn't the end of the world.
I'd like to see more threads go away.
    Hell... the board.

I wish the thread was kept so I could have seen the last few posts and any meltdown.

If I was running things, it would have been locked down and then deleted after a few days. But I'm not running things...

    But whatever.

There'll be more drama in the future...

The last few post were not very exciting.

Manimal realized the steam died down and asked in anyone had further questions. (or something to that effect) Jess 0 came in to help w/ some art advice on manimals side.

a few words between manimal and chris regarding the others art.

    then it was gone.

It is, that's why we let Tom Cruise play Nazi dress-up, even though we'd rather not.

Do those of you who object to customs have issues with people painting raw vinyl blanks? I fully understand (and tend to agree with) the contention that people shouldn't paint over the designs of designers like Mori or Kaji. Is it only a "plague" when it's someone you don't feel is qualified to be doing it, or are especially gifted customizers like Paul Kaiju and Koji Harmon also part of a plague in your view? Just curious to understand better, in case it seems like I'm challenging view on this ... which I'm not.

Opinions on this vary. I know at least one member hates all customs, regardless of how good they may look. But I THINK that it's the majority opinion of the board that good customizers are fine, but bad customizers are not fine. I dunno...that's just the impression I get from the amount of kudos for the customs of PK/LASH/etc (sorry to lump you others into "etc").

(Xoco - I been wondering how you pronounce your name. Is it "cho-ko-NO-slay"?)

Personally I don't really like to see customs on really rare toys, I think that should be avoided if at all possible.

I also don't like to see some talentless hack just out to make a buck and get a little fame by painting whatever he can get his hands on. If you are serious about learning to paint toys and sell customs at least take a little pride in your work and practice for a while first.

too bad 'raw vinyl blanks' are more than not very rare and cost far more than the painted production toy.

Yes NT, best I can figure, that's the right pronunciation. However it's Nahuatl (Aztec) so even in Mexico I'm told it's not spelled or pronounced the same way in different regions. It's a variety of "tuna" or edible Opuntia cactus fruit ... I used to be a cactus and succulent nut and some Mexican friends came up with some funny nicknames for me because they were amused by my fascination with the plants. I curse the day I chose such an awkward name for this board. It's embarrassing when I meet board members in person and can't pronounce my own screen name very well.

Thanks for the responses about customs, that's pretty much what I thought. I agree Count about rare toys and for my own part, won't commission customs of anything but blanks that were released relatively recently.

That hasn't been my experience. Am I misusing the word "blank?" I thought it was meant the same thing as "raw" or "unpainted vinyl." How is someone a sucker if they're buying something that they want?

I think I'm on record as really hating customs.

And I'll probably get alot of noise about this but I think it's wrong to take an original toy and paint over it. I would go further and say that I think it's wrong to take even a limited blank (say it was a really wild colour like a blank purple Evil) and mess with that as opposed to a large run of blanks.

If you want to be creative, get some clay and do some sculpts, cast some resin. Paint it up. Lots of people do this from board members to Le Merde. Or go wild and start painting coffee mugs or staplers.

Not sure that I'd include Paul Kaiju and Koji Harmon in this plague. One, they're much more lowkey and not in your face about it. Two, their work usually transforms the figure or builds upon it. Or to be more blunt, they don't wreck toys.

Also, they are usually approached by the owner of the figure, and I believe that the owner can do what they want with their toy even if they exercise poor judgement. Example, please customize this GID Ghostfighter for me with tribal graffiti. Whereas this growing plague just doodle around with something and then try to sell it to others.

Myself, I have no desire to own a custom piece that no one else on the planet owns. That has no appeal to me whatsoever. I'm more interested in sharing the thrill or interest of owning something that others own as well, and also appreciate. And kind of sharing and discussing the design or quality of the work, Or how certain original toys play off one another or bring things out. Not sure if I can do that if I'm sitting at home with my pink striped whatchamacallit.

And some unpainted blanks are really cool and produce a great effect in a collection.
Joshua's collection comes to mind. He has a great sense of colour and the way figures can play off each other.
