@deafmetal I used to really not like yellow vinyl, but it has definitely grown on me over the last few years! I feel like if I saw these colors written down on paper there’s no way I would think they’d work. Seein’ them as an amalgamation on the Cyclops, it’s just awesome.
@JoeMan Agreed. The original version(or at least I think it’s the OG) from Pilot Ace reflected the cover of “20 Million...” pretty nicely, except for the hot pink face and purple - ish feet. Looks awesome, but compared to this one, it doesn’t hold a candle. This new Ymir looks like it’d sit well in both cinema books and paleontologist book of dinosaur renditions.
I was searching around for more WF coverage - fairly unsuccessfully - but if anyone has seen or knows more info on the releases from Medicom, e.g. sources, pricing, etc., I'd love to hear out of curiosity mostly.
It's frustrating a company as large as Medicom does an insufficient job of documenting their offerings. Even if you want some kind of surprise and don't want to reveal everything before the show, at least do some kind of event recap. But they don't even do that, their instagram is nothing but walls of bearbricks. I think a few reveals might have been posted on Sofvi Tokyo, but the Harryhausein stuff wasn't there so I'm guessing a lot more is missing.
Here’s a set of photos from various auctions, for 2019 releases, with a few prices visible – Giant GID Cyclops 21,600yen Ymir 13,000yen Cyclops and Dragon possibly same price? Not buying much these days but looking forward to the yellow Cyclops
@smo9monster - Good to see you drop in Ian. Ymir, Cyclops, and the Dragon are the same price of 13,000 yen. The prior WF releases of these figures were also 13,000 yen.
Does anyone happen to know how big the giant Cyclops actually is? I can't seem to find an exact measurement online anywhere. I'm not super-fond of the wash/paint-rub look...but y'know...GLOW.
Huh...that's it? Are you sure you're not thinking of the standard-sized one (which I believe is just about 10")? I figured the giant one would top out at at least 12". Oh, and I'm now realizing that the figure's not paint-rubbed or washed...but it's actually just marbled GID/blue vinyl. I think. Either way, thanks for the reply!
Ah, perhaps it's closer to 12". I think the Pilot Ace Cyclops I have is 8" or 9". I only held one of these new ones for a short period of time, so I'm probably off.
"Gigantic Astro Boy" are three words that spark joy but not sure how I'm feeling about this sculpt. His super wide chest seems off, does anyone know if its a repro of a vintage Astro Boy? 60cm/23 inches
I agree, wish the chest shape wasn't so weird. I thought this would be an automatic buy for me, but it's too weird for me. 2 ft tall though!
Good eye @Russblue11, the vintage one works much better for me. It looks like I'll have to stick with my Billiken Astro until someone makes the 2ft version I've been waiting for!
Anyone spied further info on this boi yet? I can't conceive that they wouldn't do one of their open run pre-orders for this one...
I was completely intrigued when I saw news of that Astro jumbo too. I guess I am in the minority in finding it pretty great, but at the same time I totally understand and can see the weird proportions not working for everyone, too. Kevin nailed it, this is absolutely a nod to the vintage Popy chogokin line (I think). For that, I think it works and is pretty cool to have a 'giant' version of a much loved toy. But as I said, the chunkiness takes some getting used to. As devil's advocate, I also would suggest that it is a bit more difficult to make a 'humanoid' shape work in the large proportions, without it seeming like just a massive action figure; to retain that jumbo quality you sort of have to go with some form of exaggeration, and I think in this case Medicom (or whoever the sculptor/designer was) went with a logical choice. I think having the arms and legs extended slightly - or thinner - would probably reach a balance that would please most people, and be in line with more of the classic jumbos, rather than any chest mods. It also has to do with the head to body proportions (this one being on the larger end). Anyways, I'd happily adopt one, even if he might not immediately call out the massive Popy line.
The original one looks so much more cute and loving. I think they should lower the eyelashes to actually touch his iris.. it gives him a less staring look View this post on Instagram
Same! Really would lovf to know. Just can’t figure Medicom these days. Would suck if no wide release.
