Medicom with more Bullmark Zinclon tributes at WonFes in soft vinyl (photos stolen): There is also a new edition of the '77 Shogun Warriors Godzilla in what looks to be vintage goji blue/silver with red eyes:
I really like this figure I had no idea what would be sold in the WF2019 and that the figure would be 60 cm of amazing demonic sofubi.
Those are sweet! Hadn't seen the Talos. I had only seen the new colorways of the 3 preexisting sculpts show up for sale on eBay recently: Though, Talos is a bit more literal, and not quite as "vinylized" as the original 3 sculpts from Pilot Ace (or am I just crazy?) If Medicom is trying to continue this line where it was left off, wasn't there an alternate version of the Cyclops that Pilot Ace was gonna do right before they shut shop? Like a hand with a club or something? I'll bet there are collectors who still want that. I'm still trying to decide which Ymir is my favorite color so far... I've really grown to like the version I found in Japan. The blue eyes are a surprising touch.
Yeah, not really feeling the too-literal translation of the Talos. I want something a bit more akin to Marusan's Daimajin sculpt! The color schemes on the Pilot Ace trio are too movie-accurate for my tastes as well. I prefer the more whimsical colors of the previous releases.
Oooooh, Ok my mistake,. Didn't realize those actually made it out into the wild, thought they were only shown at a convention.
Exactly! Just googling a tiny bit, and it seems like there are already several large movie-accurate Talos figures on the market. SO, not exactly sure what this guy will add to the mix... Sometimes I am tolerant of toned-down colors in certain cases, but it seems like a vinyl needs to have a certain amount of blorby sculptural stylization to justify its existence if there are a lot of regular versions in toy form already.
The Medicom jumbo retro collection Kamen Rider which stands at 60cm tall is made in China. I was under the impression that all of Medicom's sofubi were made in Japan. Interesting!... any thoughts? I don't have this figure btw. It's very expensive!
They produce a lot of their stuff in China but don't disclose it. I've always thought the Pilot Ace issues were being pulled in China because the legs and feet of the Ymir have some perma warping I've never seen in Japanese vinyl. The vinyl also seems to be just a little waxier than what I'm accustomed to coming out of Japan.
What confuses me is the fact that the packaging on all the Medicom toys (their Retro Collection, and all the re-issues such as Tigermask, Triton of the Sea etc.) it clearly says Made in Japan. However, on the Jumbo Kamen Rider is the only time I've seen where it says Made in China. Other non-sofubi releases from Medicom, like the Doreamon figures, etc. clearly tell you on the packaging: Made in China.
I’ve got a pretty good handful of street figures made by Medicom from the mid 2000’s that say “Soft Vinyl Doll: Made in China” somewhere on the packaging/headers. I think it’s pretty sculpt dependent for pulling capability, as well as intellectual property dependent. Something as big as this jumbo Kamen Rider would financially make more sense to produce in China than Japan, I’d think.
Here's what I mean, these are header cards from four different sofubi toys made by Medicom, which all clearly state Made in Japan:
I know other toy manufacturers that pull standard size vinyl in Japan but have outsourced giant/jumbo sizes to China. That may be the case here with these Medicom jumbos.
I know HxS pulled some big fuck-off jumbos a couple of years back (unsure if it was for Medicom), purely because most of the old-guard were getting too old to pull something as physically demanding . . . and would presume that the new-wave may have been too inexperienced. Maybe they are still struggling to find local factories able to handle them, or China is way cheaper . . . even with the additional shipping.
Super-crazy-jumbo Shogun Warrior Godzilla and Bullpet zinclon MechaG?! Who else saw that Sofvi Life Pretty Goji on yellow vinyl? They always seem to have some new Desugoji sculpts or reissues as well. I will go harvest the YJA photos. but first... let's pour some out now to honor the death of Godzilla Vinyl Wars releases here stateside. Looking back now, I really miss the fact that I could preorder or sometimes even find these Medicom releases in some US comic shops for retail prices. I know some of these are "limited" WonFes exclusives, but damn...
So, there was a 60cm Shogun Goji and Bullpet MechaG. Here are some photos I stole of what else popped up at WonFes in the Toho realm: Guignol(?)
