Gutted that I missed the Flying Attack Human auction. He never comes up for sale!
Second-hand goods Bullmark Monster Ultraman Toho Soft Vinyl At that time Tsuburaya Productions
Went for: 147,000 yen
I bought the Mephilas. Hopefully he cleans up good, I will let you know how things go. That seller had some cool but very dirty toys. I bid on Megalon and Miclas as well but both went for more than I wanted to spend given condition. Mephilas might prove to be a bad decision too but he’s rare enough that I wanted to take a chance.
Congratulations on that amazing score, I'm glad that someone from the board has taken that Hawaiian version, you are right that seller had some great pieces. I also noticed that most of the pieces had a layer of something stuck to the vinyl, I think there is a good chance that with a good bath all that dirt will fall. Please share a photo with me of the figure when it is completely clean or if you can a photo of before and after the bath.
Again many congratulations for this amazing score!
@NewChrissy - I feel that you made a solid bet on this one. I also put up a bid on the Megalon, but it did go a bit higher than I was hoping, and it seems a few others felt the same way that these toys were going to clean up nicely. It looks like they were stored in a very dirty/dusty shed with some moisture and humidity that allowed the dirt to cake onto the vinyl a bit. Good luck with your upcoming cleaning project. Please post some photos.
@NewChrissy congratulations on the purchase and good luck with the clean up, look forward to seeing the finished piece. I had a go at the mini Giras also hoping it would be cheaper due to the condition but to no avail.
Bullmark standard size taigan at that time
Went for: 287,000 yen
Woah! somehow I missed that Taigon. Hardly ever see the bullmark version anymore. Thanks for sharing Roger
Sorry Jonathan didn't know you were looking for of this Taigon’s and the auction had been around for a while since the initial price the seller had set was ¥ 220,000. If I see another for sale I will let you know.
@NewChrissy congrats on this score!!! I was following all of these dirty toys as well; megalon went far higher that I wanted and the miclas was broken...which for me is a no. Congrats again!!!! I think all of us are eagerly waiting for a before and after pic when you get this amazing piece.
No, I just like seeing this stuff. Im definitely not in the market for one now. Looking to add the enterprise one to my collection but the bullmark is way too much.
This example was for sale online for several months. I was interested but someone I know and consider to be an expert handled it in person and deemed it to be a fake. If it’s genuine though, the winner of the auction made out like a bandit imo.
Thank you! It is at my friend’s house now in Japan. Unfortunately, it arrived with more issues than you can see in the auction photos but the seller was very agreeable and gave me a partial refund. I’ll document the cleaning process and will post the before and after in the cleaning thread, though I won’t have him in hand for another month or so.
At that time Ultraman Uncopyright Pachimono 30cm Tsuburaya Pro Red Molding Showa Retro
Went for: 34,000 yen
I am not an expert in Ultraman figures but I could think that due to the color combination of the figure it could be a Korean or Taiwanese bootleg, very beautiful piece due to the combination of the chest and red head with the gray of the extremities.
@Alebrije Thanks for compiling all these past auctions, Roger. There have certainly been some choice toys come up for sale of late. More surprising to me is the prices that people are dishing out for them, too. Whereas I thought that the current climate would have a lot of collectors playing more 'conservatively' - and certainly I would also classify myself into that grouping - it does not seem to be the case based on YJA figures.
@NewChrissy Wow, congrats on winning that export Mephilas. Yeah, I think there were a lot of us vintage heads eyeing up that seller's listings. Weird on the condition of them, but for sure worth it to take the opportunity to snag one of those when you can. Just to echo the others, I am definitely very keen to see how he does clean up. Care to elaborate more on what happened/condition issues upon arrival? Wow though, a partial refund, that is actually something incredible to hear about. I would have never thought that was possible. So amazing though that you have a friend in Japan to be a waystation for these wonderful toys and act on your behalf. I think I am as jealous of that, or more, than adopting the Mephilas!
I really love that poly bi-colour Ultra so much. Another member here was trying for it, and I was so hoping that he might be successful. Alas, it seems there was competition. I am not sure I recall seeing one of these before, the colour scheme does seem vaguely familiar to me though. It is a really wonderful figure in any case.
Oh wow!! Looking forward on the pictures!!!!
This was a good one. Ivory Marusan Neronga in really good condition. That blue paint is of course incredible, but whereas the figure has some 'damage' to it (quite common on these versions) I actually love the way it allows that great vinyl to show through. The playoff of the two colours is phenomenal, and even with the writing on the soles, the whole of the toy is just so perfect in its wabi sabi-ness, and played history, I am stunned. Would love to someday find one of these and be able to adopt him, but I am really even just enjoying appreciating him in the photos. I find him just dreamy, and I wouldn't change a thing.
Marusan Neronga, blue on cream vinyl, ended at 89,550円.
[Yokohama antique] Bullmark soft vinyl Mechani-Kong magic with name
Went for: 45,500 yen
Some nice stuff! Stunning Neronga and love those break dancing Mecha Kong photos!
Really love that light blue metallic MK, the colours play so wonderfully on this guy. Wish I could have made a play for that one, but just couldn't happen right now. I thought it might actually have ended higher, vintage toy prices have been all over the place recently.
There has been a rash of double-stamp Marusan Godzillas lately, four in the last month (for whatever reason). Prices on these - as with many vintage toys on the market - have honestly been all over the place. I really don't know what to make of it. You see some pretty 'average' figures sell for just ridiculous piles of money, and other stuff not so much. Anyways, wanted to record some of these here for posterity, so forgive me the single-minded diversion.
Auction 1, 10 October 2020, ended at 21,000円. 1966 Marusan Goji, peach/pink eye version. The pics for this one have seen been pulled, but actually you can see it was repeated again (for whatever reason).
Auction 2, 17 October 2020, ended at 23,700円 (a banner day! ^_^). Another fairly nice double-stamped example, this time with what appears to be the white eyes. Less of the nice silvering, but I thought it might have gotten a little less attention due to a mislabeled auction listing (but was not stolen either). Just a hint of the deep blue on the spine.
Auction 3, 26 October 2020, ended at 46,600円. Okay, this one was a beauty. I'll admit it, I went all in on this one. The red eyes on him and that incredible silvering all over, it all just came together to be the choice version for me. Even with the extra paint part and the writing on the feet, I could not have cared less. This was the Godzilla I have been waiting for. I don't even know what to say. Wabi sabi, a beauty, and just even now looking at the pics, I think I am in love. Could be the pics, but it also seems so much more royal blue than the traditional '66 colour. Alas, I got blown out of the water right at the end. Like this one before it, this was one of the odd cases where it was not an auto-extension auction. I thought this might have played some in my favour, but actually all it meant was the price jumped 20k yen in the last couple minutes. Sigh. This is one of those which will stick with me.
What an example!
Auction 4, 28 October 2020, ended at 25,600円. Interestingly, this is the same one as sold earlier for 21k (listing 1). I thought that price was fairly good for the example, but I guess maybe a non-payer? And in the end the relisting either brought out more people, or people decided to fight it out more over this one. In the end it ended higher. Not bad, peach eyes and a little silvering. Bit of wear to the paint around the mouth.
As a bonus, you also get to see how much one of these toys weighs, if you enjoy geeking out over things like this as I do.
And just to show that the two listings were in fact the same,
I don't know if it is vintage or not, but I'm just astonished by the ending price... it was "only" 81,000yens yesterday...
