"The Shape of Punk to Come", how could I forget that. One of my all time favorties. I guess I do like some new stuff. Some Girls are pretty good too.

While were on the subject, does anyone remember Time in Malta? Great Bay Area band I think many have never heard.

Well said. what I think of as hardcore (DOA, Offenders, Circle Jerks, Germs) probably sounds more like standard rock now, but at the time it was quite radical. (Somehow I think Abe and I are about the same age). However, it only took about two years for HC as a viable term to die - for me, at least - as soon as all of the identikit bands, who listened exclusively to HC, and MRR, SXE-type rules started springing up.

I'm not familiar with the majority of the bands being discussed here, but the ones I've heard seem to owe at least as much to metal as they do HC (a trend that, as I recall, started with bands like COC & DRI -not to mention the heineous SSD - who later on turned into full-on metal bands.)

But, as Bryan said, it really comes down to when you came of age musically.I'm just glad this hasn't devolved into a "(insert band here) sucks" thread - it's interesting to read peoples' takes on this.

A little late to the thread but my favorites would have to be No for an Answer, Youth of Today, Sacred Denial (the early years), Nations on Fire and probably Negative Approach. Can't just pic one.
I had pretty much fell out of the scene about 7 years ago and cashed my chips in for noise/experimental stuff which I always liked. Everything got too metal for me, no heart and annoying lectures from bands on how high school is rough. Not as rough as it WAS in the day. I buy like 2 or 3 hc cds a year now and that it. The only things that have impressed me over the last 3 or 4 years have been My Revenge, Champion and CockPunch

SIDE NOTE: I was lucky to see 25 ta Life in SD during the comic con 2 years ago at some little Irish bar, thats one band that still remains on my list.

i am with the old man army on this one...90% of the groups mentioned here,,i have never heard of...haven't a clue??

i guess the early90's grunge explosion really turned the entire "underground" scene on its head...

it is also my fault for diving into the rave scene at that time (no sXe contingents in those parts  ,,except moby pre-popstar days)...ironically,,lots of rave music from 89'-94' is called hardcore too...so,,,go figure!!!

nowadays,,i listen to a bastard mix of all the things i avidly listened to from the 70'-90's

did anyone say TSOL? I didn't want to read the whole post.

The bad brains on MTV thing is they promote a random band every week, all my friends thought Bad Brains was the title of a new song by korn. Apparently thats what they look and sound like now.

Sorry man, like I said, hardcore always has a personal definition. Despite those bands not falling into what I'd considered hardcore, without a doubt, they are all hugely influential and groundbreaking in their own ways. In this case, you also cannot forget Nomeansno.

Bryanarchy as the voice of reason in a flame prone thread... Hats off on keeping the peace ;)

I myself rarely engage in Cranky Old Punk Rock antics IRL but I have to admit I do have a propensity to do the "old school" troll here where there are a bunch of other olden timers.

KJB, just curious what are you listening to nowadays?

ohhh,,nomeansno,,,there is a great band..never got much recognition,,,or played out east for that matter..

as for their canadian brethren DOA,,,they toured too much,,i reckon they would play nyc-area shows more often than locals...

Nomeansno was an important band for me in the early 90's. I really dug the simplicity and intensity of their music. A great thing to check out is their side project The Hanson Brothers; a hockey themed tribute to the Ramones. They used to tour east in Canada as Nomeansno and then return west as the Hanson Brothers.

DOA is still kicking. I was in a Black Flag tribute band and we opened for them a year or so ago. Joey Shithead is as energetic as ever.

Abe- I know what you mean about being the old school troll. I've been involved in the all-ages music scene here for 17+ years. I've seen it all and when the 'next new thing' shows up, it's not that new at all...

Ha ha. Yeah, I find myself in that position more often than I'd like nowadays, especially since many of the people writing about music (both locally and nationally) seem to lack any knowledge of history.

As for what I listen to, it's (as it has always been) a kind of bizarre mix - latest faves are Future of the Left (ex-Mclusky), Miley Cyrus (yes, the "Hannah Montana" girl; her new CD is amazing pop music), Peter Hammill (from Van Der Graaf Generator), and this Belgian singer named Arno - none of his stuff is out in the US, but it's really varied and astounding. Plus tons of stuff from the past, from Rush to the Dickies to Coltrane.

I'm glad they're reissuing things like the original DOA records; those still sound as good as ever. Not a lot of new stuff really does it for me, unfortunately; plus there's so much of it that I have to rely on recommendations from people I trust, rather than being able to just go out and pick stuff up at random.

Agreed, one cool thing about MP3s and CD's and the renewed interest in old music (not just Punk) is that reissues make former rarities accessible to everyone.

One thing thats funny is rehearing music I haven't heard in 20 years, that I thought some records were amazing back then and they turned out to be total crap in the long run. Ah the folly of youth!

personally I think TSOL sucks. bad. I think people just say they like them because they are afraid of jack grisham, as I would be too but I'm an east coaster, they had one good song? code blue?

Yes...you are correct. Nomeansno are a great band of the past and still in the present! They also put on a great show. I guess it all depends on who you talk to. My greats are just that...great to me. I should have not faulted you on your picks, but I will(and did)bring up others who(in this case)are from Canada who I believe are highly influential.

Hey No Fair Banned you can't just post the lamest record of a band's discography and dis on em! Personally I am not that big a fan either tho.

I know there's alot of East Coast HxC heads on here but I always thought NYHC had a major a Napoleon Complex. D.C. is of course above reproach in the Bad Brains/Minor Threat era
