dude. they deserve it. as do DYS for fire and ice. SSD for how we rock and plenty, PLENTY of dc bands. although my point is tsol does not have a "wolfpack" or "The Kids Will Have Their Say" to stand behind. /end rant

Although I may agree with the napolean complex. they have no reason to. More great bands by square foot then any city ever? ok maybe thats a stretch but urban waste is not too shabby. I still lose it anytime I hear the beginning of world peace or the beginning of new direction(hey im only 28!)

how about this for the old men on this board. Mecht mensch: overrated?

I think LA, Austin, DC, and maybe SF had far superior scenes. I say maybe SF because I was prolly a little too close to judge between good bands and friends bands ;).

Canada fucking ruled...used to go up there when I was 15 and crash on floors. One of the most chaotic bands was called CAPITALIST ALIENATION...only one LP released but it fucking KILLED. Had a killer cover that Away from Voivod made for them. Female vokillist as well and she put a lot of macho dudes to shame. I remember crashing on their floor once, they had a baby alligator and ferrets running around biting my feet when I was trying to sleep. Good times...

While I agree that the TSOL album posted is not representative of their entire oevre, I also have to agree with the fact that they were never that good to begin with - although the fact that they had a sense of melody early on was cool, I certainly would never have labeled them "hardcore". Great to hear someone else have the cojones to call bullshit on the Boston HC/HM "evolution" - I've been saying that for decades now.

And, as an old guy/born-and-bred Wisconsinite, I'll have to back up the Mecht Mensch "overrated" call. Great guys, all of them, but musically, not so much. Fast and loud does not necessarily equal great songs.

I def. wouldnt call em Hardcore either the seemed to fill in the "Not as good as 45 Grave" slot. <sidetrack>Now 45 Grave while not HxC at all was one of the best bands I've ever seen</sidetrack>

45 Grave were great. Never got to see them, but they were some of the best musicians in LA at the time. Don Bolles is an amazing drummer, in addition to having great (varied) taste in music. Has anyone here ever seen his band Celebrity Skin? Not HC in the least, but astoundingly outrageous glam/pop.

Paul B. Cutler was an incredible guitarist too. After he left 45 Grave I think he got into production and quit playing in bands but honestly one of my favorite punk guitarists. Surf Bat is the best! Sleep in Safety is still on heavy rotation in my itunes.

What about all the almost hardcore micro-genres? There is a lot more that I love that falls into those categories.
Spazz, man is the bastard, Ulcer, Fuck on the Beach... maybe thats a thread on it's own though. I don't have the patience anymore for punk/hardcore that is slower than a bagillion bpm... :) ha ha ha ahhhh...

Woo woo! The first few times I saw Malfaction, they were more of a metal edged hardcore. They really came together well once they switched to Grind though. There have been a lot of good Winnipeg grid/powerviolece bands over the years. There was/is a strong hardcore sceen to, but I didn't get involved with it 'cuz it was predominantly Macho - Christian hardcore and actually kinda violent to the other scenes.

What are you crazy? The singer wish he was in Token Entry, he gets points for that they put on a great show... "less plot more blood" indeed.
The best thing is they don't take themselves too seriously unlike all the other new school so called "hardcore" bands with their posturing like they have reason to be mad other than the fact they don't have an iphone or a new scion.

How the fuck did I miss all this??? haha I feel like a stupid idiot. I didn't go back and read every post but I have to say I see quite a few gems in this list.

Modern punk/hardcore really lets me down. I think most bands have just been following the formula they know will work. Very few bands break the mold and take risks with their music. It sucks, touring regularly over the past 5 years I've just played with worse and worse bands, every night. It really wears down on your faith about music in general. haha.

Some of the few bands that have influenced my life: Refused, Earth Crisis, Bueno and Propagandhi. These bands had the most profound impact on my growing up and really showed me things such as, sxe and being veggie. There lyrics are awesome, especially prop, their lyrics blow my fucking mind. There is this band here in good old Prescott, AZ, called All Autonomy formally "Bueno". Anyway, their lyrically style reminds me of Propagandhi and musically they were much more melodic punk. I love them, more than anyone they had the most impact because they were right here. I got to see them all the time, it was amazing.

Swallowing shit is fucking amazing. I remember seeing pictures of those christian groups outside, protesting their shows. That made me laugh so fucking hard.

Anyway, I just feel like lately no bands have really been pushing any boundaries and making me feel something. Very few modern bands do anything for me.

Lewd Acts, Outbreak, ISIS, Converge, Broadway Calls, Jesu. Some are hard, some aren't.

I never got the deal with the jesus mosh kids in winnipeg. The closest I ever came to blows was at a punk show with some winnipeg kid who thought it was fun to spin kick girls. The last time my old band played winnipeg, it was a hardcore show and kids were too terrified to stand anywhere near the front of the stage, they all hugged the walls of the hall.

Ya, it got out of hand for a while.
I stopped even trying to go to those show after I almost got my face punched in at a R.A.M.B.O show. Both the crusty thrash kids and the toughguy hardcore kids were out. Ugghhh... I stopped this guy called beat you up Ben from beating up this crusty girl that was all drunk. He almost punched my lights out.
    The show was a mess.

The Spin Kicking bystanders thing became an every show event.

    If it matters..

Currently the best active hardcore band right now is Limp Wrist! Right behind them I would say Career Suicide,Direct Control,Tragedy.....

Career Suicide puts out way too many records. I think I'd like them alot better if they didn't.

Yeah but listen to them and it's not that much material. The Sars 7" is about 5 minutes long, the Invisible Eyes 12" is an ep and about 9 minutes long.

I agree. way way to much. i love them live but i cannot listen to them on record.

Ikka I will say Im still more of a government warning fan over direct control. The next record will kill everybody. heres a fun fact. Fat mike begged direct control to sign to fat wreckords. they got big fat no.

Charles Bronson were great for their time and I got to see them 3 times but they basically were a power violence band that played sloppy and snotty thrash. I think,IMHO,that they were way overrated. The Lp is good,as is the split 7" with Spazz but the other shit was kinda hit or miss,so it really never made a strong impression on me.
