Well, he bet $100 that the LHC would not find the Higgs Boson, but not finding the Higgs would not necessarily mean that the LHC didn't 'work' - It could give results far more shocking than finding the Higgs would be ...

Now this thread has me thinking that aliens wrecked our economy so that we wouldn't mind having the planet used as a maquiladora for small-scale black hole production.
