Southern rap did not kill hip hop, Jay-Z & the whole hat on top of your wave activator stocking cap killed hip hop... and everybody forgetting how to rap & instead just emulate Jay-Z and talking about what kind of cars they want to buy when they get big. Southern rap has been here for years killing it under the radar, U.G.K., The Geto Boys, 8 Ball & MJG, Rap-A-Lot, Suave House, Outkast, dungeon family, Cash Money was a cool label long before any one outside of Louisiana ever heard of them. All anyone outside of the south generally knows of southern rap is post-Master P & a lot of really, really good stuff came out before that.

I grew up around hip-hop, my dad owned a hip-hop record store across from roosevelt High in Fresno in the 90's, and threw parties and Djed out of the back of his store and in the local area( Kerman, etc). I was rappin' DJ Quicks " Tonight" at the age of 8 or 9 at shows. I grew up listening to Eazy E, Dj Quick, Too Short, Mac Dre, all the Old School ( Sugar hill, GMF &F5,etc) When I was in HS I really started to like "underground" hip-hop, like Hiero, and Del, Doc Octagon, Pharcyde, Wutang and all their incartnations, Prince Paul, etc. I really started to get into "trip -Hop" in the 90's like Dj Shadow, Spooks, Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack. Now I rarely listen to any new Hip-hop, mostly metal and punk, a little folk and Post Hardcore for good measure. I did recently buy the Cool Kids and new Common album and love both of them.Kanye is allright, but I couldnt listen to a whole album of that computer voice.

Asher Roth definately has talent. On the couple of joints i heard he spits a decent amount of variety, both in flow and content. I slightly understand where the Eminem comparison comes from - his vocals sound like he's singing from thru his nose... The 'i love college' rmx with Jim Jones was dope though.

3. wu are back? not only does rza's 2nd afro samurai soundtrack album own, but i've listened to a bit of the new wu album. good shit!

i noticed raekwon's alb and method man/redman blackout! 2 the other day. passed on both for now, but really want to grab them. the first cuban linx was kind of a sleeper album, yet has a track with one of my all time favorite hip-hop beats on it...

cuban linx 2 is solid. has a real nice flow to it. meth shows up on 2 tracks and just kills it. great beats too. there are 2 dr dre tracks that stick out like a sore thumb. i don't hate them. but they don't fit in. i assume they are leftovers from when dre was supposed to do the album. so now we know what a west coast wu-tang album would sound like.

i say, pass on blackout 2. blackout 1 is one of my fav albums of all time (and oddly enough contains one of my alltime fav beats on da rockwilder). part 2 is decent...but not great. it doesn't have that cohesiveness. meth sounds a bit bored on it. redman actually sounds better than meth on some tracks. it was a disappointment overall. i also noticed the rza is not a producer on any of the shit, which could account for the different feel to it.

yeah, i noticed that too. what the hell is up with that? rza is one of the best hip-hop producers imo, why would you not utilize that wu-connection?
also, any collaborations with MF Doom like on Ghostface's Fishscale & More Fish albums, or is doom only associated with gf?
