Bingo. Hand made by people who are not slaves.

Awesome video should be titled "Got Soul?"

Any "secret base" production vids out there? or too "secret'?

Watching these clips makes you really appreciate the time and skill that goes into making these toys.

Thanks to everyone for sharing!

I've been fantasizing about going to Japan to film the entire process and track down the old guys who did vintage stuff back in the day. Seems like Toypunks 2 will have more of this kind of production footage, can't wait.

Anyway, it was my understanding that Japanese slush casting still required rotation (since not the whole mold cavity is filled with liquid vinyl). If you jump about 30 minutes into the Marusan video, it clearly shows slow rotational molds...then the excess being drained off.

Chinese roto casting (again, just my understanding) uses high-speed rotational molds and only injects a small amount of vinyl (enough to coat the walls), so there's no excess to drain off...

Okay...well, I don't know if anyone actually gives a shit, but I got to the bottom of this.

Mark explained to me that Shimizu-san actually used the centrifuge in the past just to pull the air bubbles out of the vinyl. The parts were still slush-cast. About 3 years ago, he got a cock diesel vacuum chamber, and it's apparently a lot more efficient. Now, the centrifuge is filled with old molds and boxes! :P

I would love to have one of those old molds. I remember seeing some in person at Superfestival many years ago.

Go visit Yuji again, Coop. Last time I was there the dining room was about 2/3 full with boxes of molds. I don't think he even knows what's in 90% of them.

Ah. The vacuum chamber is in the video Mark posted, and it wasn't in the TV show. Now the whole "vacuform" thing I've been told about is starting to make sense. It's all coming together...

I'm going back to Japan in September on business, but I'll be in Nagano. I'm gonna try to work out a few extra days in Tokyo, though.

I give a shit! Thanks for asking Mark about this.

I'm still determined to find some video of the molds being made. In the old thread that Stealthtank linked to, there's a mention of the molds being produced through electroplating a wax cast of the figure with bronze. I'd love to see someone start with the clay sculpt and take it through all the stages till that completed mold with the handles is done.

I like this part
Quote:
Yuguchi -
The parts attached to lost wax cast before pouring molten bronze metal. Put bronze powder on the lost wax cast, and coiled lead line on the Yuguchi. Put it in the tub filled with copper sulfate and add electric current to make the copper stick to the product. Originally, Yuguchi was the word for casting. The original meaning is dissolving iron like water.
