Re: The "What You Got In The Mail That Isn't A Vinyl Toy" Th
Not everything has to be physical. I appreciate a DJ that matches beats from vinyl, but so does the one that does it via software. There is more to it than that. Both are valid forms of playing. It's still having a good idea about what mixing is.
One thing that it is true, it looks cool as hell and shows some true dedication.

Re: The "What You Got In The Mail That Isn't A Vinyl Toy" Th
While I'm not going to dispute that beat matching mp3's or CD's is DJ'ing, it's not really the same. Having a controller tell you everything is matched up BPM wise isn't really teaching your ear to listen for pitch. Equipment failure, bad mp3's, hard drive failure, I'm just not down with digital dj'ing. The only advantage I see is not having to lug records around, but sometimes having too much of a selection (due to everything being at your fingertips) is in itself a problem. I remember when people started using cd's/mp3's (I've been spinning vinyl since 1994) me and my friends would laugh when DJ's would have bad mp3's and right in the middle of a track you'd hear that skipping washing machine sound. Sure records skip also but you usually know about it and can physically see where it's going to happen. Records and analog sound have been proven to have better sound quality. Besides all that, why do I hate digital DJ'ing? Well for starters they cost me my job and livelyhood in NYC. I got laid off from being a buyer as brick and mortar stores started closing down (well that and 9/11 crushed all business south of Houston in NYC around the time). Unless you have some cush stock market job, and you work in a niche industry you don't have savings. Losing my job and my apartment being sold in the same week- pretty much exiled me out of a city I loved. Smurph726 wrote: Lixx wrote: Now I regret it because I can't stand digital DJ's. That was a major setback for the soon-to-be "lost art" of beat matching, and each CDJ manufactured is another nail in the coffin. Good luck with reopening that door, Lixx. Glad to see vinyl's not completely dead... yet. Thanks. Now if I can just find a pair of those elusive technics 1200's for a decent price and in decent shape I'll be all set. Sold mine in 2004 when I thought I would never DJ again- if I had known Technics would have stopped making them in 2010 I would have never done that.

Bitterpill wrote: Brown Leaf Mimic Praying Mantis Holy crap! I had an encounter with one of those when I was a kid: As we were all leaving school at the end of the day I was about to step on this big brown leaf to hear it crunch. Fortunately I caught a glimpse of something that made me bend down and actually examine it. It was one of these fellas (not this species, of course. I was in Virginia) about as long head-to-tail as my 12 year old foot (size 10 ½ US?)! It was already dead but I still would have felt bad squishing it unceremoniously. No one that I tried to show it to could see through the camouflage though; they just thought that it was a leaf.

^ Indeed...if this thing is in its natural environement, with the wings folded up, you will never see it. Looks like kaiju to me, plus framed bugs just look cool on my bookshelves. This one is about 4 inches, just a baby compared to what you ran into

Very much wish there were vinyl versions to accompany them. The headers, as far as I'm concerned, as frame worthy.
