I think it's supposed to be Aztec inspired?

Also, love criticizing the art but sticking Mark's face on a shitting unicorn seems a bit much.

professorabcd has done it again. He definitely dominates the “toys you can smell” category.

I don’t think it’s the skull in particular that’s fugly, just the thought that we all know Mark is going to rainbow it all up.

Whether or not it’s too much, I can’t really say.

Thanks. I probably should have intuited that from the copious hashtags.

Looks more like a traditional heiroglyph; Mayan, Aztec, Mixtec. But I ain't no sophistikated ehspert.

I think it styled after Aztec carvings. Frank Mysterio is from Mexico, so that make sense. Not sure why it needs to exist in vinyl, though.

Agreed. One of the several reasons this thread makes me uncomfortable from time to time.

I prefer the “presented without comment” approach, because getting personal usually feels way more icky than even the most vile toys.

I know art is subjective, and sometimes I see unprofessional behavior in this hobby that warrants criticism. Lots of thirsty people trying to find shortcuts to success with ugly stuff designed to be provocative- almost asking for ridicule.

But, that’s not the case with Mark. Maybe someone’s style isn’t for everyone. Heck, I don’t love every paint job some of even my favorite artists put out. That’s just part of being a creative. Lots of hits and misses if you’re prolific, putting out a lot, taking lots of chances.

Some great toys exist because of Mark’s efforts. He’s done some nice paints too. This seemed especially uncalled for when he hasn’t even started painting it yet.

Not for me. But I applaud Frank and punk drunkers for doing that collab together. Much more interesting than the other PD collabs I’ve seen.

The bodies I can do without but I really like those heads. Personally, being half Mexican myself, I applaud Frank for approaching toys with designs that are meaningful to him and an appreciation of the culture, much like Jesse Hernandez far before him. It can very much be questioned as to “why in vinyl?”, and to an extent I ask that myself. But it’s his chosen medium and he’s not bastardizing or pushing bullshit with the medium pertaining to the Aztec/Mayan/Spanish/Mexican designs.

Mark's paint on that skull looks really nice to me. I think it helps that the figure is more of a blank canvas than something with arms and legs and etc. Those clouds really show off his skills as an illustrator. But then again I'm a fan of his rainbow style paint jobs too, so...

absolutely, his skills are not in question. But once again, i see the same old day-glo work that 'customisers' have been pushing for yonks now. Just blast that toy with eye popping shit and charge triple the price ...

To me, the rainbow paint jobs are often a cop-out. They don't utilize the physical features of the vinyl and just rely on color to catch someone's attention. That toy was sculpted a certain way to physically convey an idea. Complement that idea with your paint job! Don't bury it and dismiss it.

As a counterpoint, this little guy is fucking adorable:

Mark Nagata is definitely a skilled painter. There’s no denying that. For me at least, he’s lacking in the taste department. Rainbows and planets are kind of… hmm, I’m not sure what kind of word I’m looking for, perhaps gimmicky? Not everything needs to be Lisa Frank’d to death. If that’s someone’s kind of toy, then good for them. I just don’t find it appealing.

Also that gopher/bear/whatever… I just want to ask why?
