I could not be happier to see a return to some classic Tsubu beauties. At long last, one of my favourite '66 crew guys is getting the Buta treatment. I hope for some more classic colours (both paint and vinyl) on these new releases.
Weird that the eartennae are upturned. Made me think for a moment that maybe it was Bemler in the pipeline... I fear it just might be too much for my poor heart if Greenmons, Gyango and Bemler were to drop in the same year, let alone the same day!
Maybe it is time with some new guys coming out that we do the annual Buta wish listing. I for one am so excited to see a return to Tsubu characters, and could not be happier to finally have a chance at one of my all time favourite '66 crew kaiju. I am also really hoping for a Mummy to match the Dodongo in development (so I will forbear mentioning him for now). So, that being said, my current fav hopefuls, in an order I reserve the right to rearrange at will, are: Pestar Hydra Jamila 3-Faced Dada Zetton Again, there are a million other characters I want to see get the Buta treatment, but I am limiting myself to scope here (OGs) and just five dudes.
Don't forget painted Greenmons and painted Antlar! Fantasy list time, eh Steve? Limited to five? I'm going to have to cheat with Taro-style 2-packs: Dodongo & Mummy Man Gavadon & Gavadon Banila & Aboras Kiyla & Saigo Alien Zetton & Zetton As long as we're fantasizing.
I want to be excited that he's doing a Gyango... but the upturned eartennae are a real sticking point for me... those things should be straight out! It's a big part of the charm of the monster's design! Tens of other monsters have ears like the ones on this sculpt... why not take advantage of one of his most distinctive features? There is a precedent in a couple of vintage sculpts for the upturned ears, it true... but I've never enjoyed it...
Hush now Mike, all will be forgiven. It is unusual, and like everyone else I am sure, I thought this was a Bemler in the initial stages. Then I figured maybe he was going to do a real homage, and actually use the same base for two different sculpts, which would have blown my mind. We have seen a lot of wax hints in the past too that have not yet seen the light of production day, so it could be this is still in 'playing around' stages. It is a shame about the eartennae, especially since they are just ears now, but I still think I am in love with him. You are probably right that most of the impression for him came from the SAN sculpt, but even that I feel was partially between the two (not upright, but not to the side either).
GRRRgrumblegrumblegrumble... I'm an old kaiju grump! Well, I'm not fully dismissing it... I'm looking forward to seeing it finished...
And for the uninitiated: vs Bandai....................................................................................................Yamanaya........................................................................................................................................Popy Bullmark mini....................................................................................................Marusan/Bullmark original..................................................................SAN model kit Popy rubber mini.......................................................................................................................................................And whatever these weird bone models are P.S. Did I mention I love Gyango?
I also love Gyango, deeply... if I wasn't all about Garamon, I would be all about Gyango. And I'm certainly not opposed to interpretation! Here's one of my pieces from FOE's Monster Invitational 2011, a custom Pilot Ace Gyango: Now back to our regularly-scheduled Buta-programming...
I am by no means a Buta fan, but I have been waiting to see them drop a greenmons forever and I will definately say they did not disapoint
GYANGO!!!! Can I say it louder? GEEYANGOOOOOO!!!! Over the sieras and around the long way over to Japan.
Gyango is so interesting to stare at. The colors used on the body for the Bandai version remind me of a totem pole, so cool.
^ your pattern matching skills are better honed than mine. i don't mind gyango's angled ear-tennae at all now that i see it painted up and ready to be released upon the world. at least the twisty-action has been represented!
